Location and Climate:

The Terra Alta climate is typically Mediterranean, but with certain nuances. The summers are hot and dry, with the early evening southwest wind has a very significant regulatory effect, which is very important during ripening. It "cools" the stock, preventing the sugar synthesis from ceasing.

Winters are generally cold, alternating between days of strong, dry winds, with cloudy days and fairly significant frosts. Rain, as in every Mediterranean climate, is very irregular. It comes preferably in Autumn and often very heavy. Throughout the year, classic mid-afternoon storms can appear during summer, and they don't generally tend to be very significant in winter.

The attributes obtained in the wines have their literal roots in the peculiarities of the soil in which the vines grow. The soils are mostly poor in nutrients, with high contents of active lime, with rather clayey textures. The soils are arranged on terraces and gentle slopes, which avoid the excessive accumulation of water when there is significant rain.

Given the diversity of the terminal, the vineyards are located between 250-500 metres above sea level, meaning there are different microclimates in which they can adapt their varieties.

The Agrícola Sant Josep winery is located in the Designation of Origin Terra Alta, know for the cultivation of indigenous varieties, especially Garnacha (Blanc and Negre) which are the main basis for their wines. They also use Maccabean, Cariñena and “ull de llebre” varieties, as well as others incorporated in recent years, such as Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Muscatel. This combination of varieties, playing with selected mixtures, forms the different wines of Agrícola Sant Josep, each one with its unique characteristics that make it special and valued everywhere.

Viticulture Information:

In recent years, innovative efforts have been made to upgrade the facilities, from the fermentation to ageing and conservation in the winery.

In fermentation, a special emphasis has been put on stainless steel tanks with drainage and automatic temperature control in relation to the black varieties, and pneumatic pressing in the case of the white grapes. For the ageing process, the most prestigious cask surfaces have started to be introduced in order to adapt each one to its better ageing possibilities. The different woods and toasts that have been offered to them have also been taken into account.

In relation to conservation they have placed a lot of importance on the temperature and humidity conditions in the rooms where the casks and all the bottles are kept, since once a great wine has been obtained, all of its qualities have to be made to last – something which is achieved by climatising the ageing rooms.
