Location and climate

The winery is located in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, main town for the sparkling wines D.O. Cava produced in the Penedes region, situated just 50 Km southwest of Barcelona. In this region – Penedes – Juvé y Camps has more than 400 Ha of vineyards. The area that makes up the Penedes has a great variety of microclimates thanks to its proximity to the coast – 40 km – and its altitude – between 150 and 700 metres –.

Typical climate of the Penedes is Mediterranean. Characterized by warm to hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. January is usually the coldest month and July the warmest. Due to the mountains and hills, the area is protected from cold winds. Annual rainfall is 520 litres per square metre. Maximum rainfall is in autumn followed by the spring. 




More than two hundred years ago, in 1796, Joan Juvé, a bold and enterprising vine grower with ideas way ahead of his time, laid the foundations of what would become the family firm. He began the task which was carried on by his son, Antoni, who, amongst other challenges, had to confront the effects of the terrible phylloxera plague. Advocating replanting, with other leading figures of the Penedes, he led a drive to restore the vineyards and to rebuild the wine production of the region.

A man respected and loved by his contemporaries, his example encouraged his son, Joan, to build the family’s first winery. He married Teresa Camps, an exceptional woman and an enthusiastic supporter who inspired her husband to launch, in 1921, the first sparkling wine under the “Juvé” brand. It was made in the underground cellars beneath the family home in San Sadurní d’Anoia. 

Their two sons, Josep and Joan, joined the management of the firm at the beginning of the 1940’s. They gave a new momentum to the companies’ development, in particular by building a new winery on the outskirts of the town. Then, at the end of the sixties, the founders’ grandsons brought young energy to the company which by then had acquired a solid reputation and a strong presence in the sparkling wine market. Some years later, under the direction of Josep and Joan, a thorough re-structuring of the company was undertaken with the enlarging of the underground cellars for the production and maturing of the “Cavas” as well as the bringing in of some important technical advances.


They were pioneers of such important aspects of the production of base wine as pneumatic presses and fermentation temperature control. These advances enabled the company to make “Cavas” of the highest quality. At the beginning of the seventies, Juvé & Camps was now a highly reputed company, regularly opening new markets and whose “Cavas” were exported to the most important consuming markets, Great Britain, The United States, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Venezuela.

The firms development, from father to son, over three generations, has culminated in the construction of a fine new winery for the production and ageing of still wines, in the middle of the Espiells property. Created by the family architect, Josep Juvé, it is one of the most up to date in the region. Thus, a project begun two hundred years ago by Senyor Joan and Senyora Teresa has grown and progressed into the reality of the thriving enterprise of today.



The high value which the Juvé family place on doing everything to the best standards, and which is shown in their attention to detail in the cultivation of their vineyards and the making of the wines, is clearly evident in each and every product. This particular attention paid to presentation, which is a characteristic of the house, extends to the very buildings of the company, from the exquisite, private family chapel, the meeting rooms to the salons for receiving customers. It really could not be otherwise for a company which considers its wines as authentic works of art, the products of team work, the team of the house of Juvé & Camps.


It is thanks to such quality work in every area of the business that the winery, after being consolidated in the first position in the high end segment in the domestic market, has moved on as ambassadors of the finest Spanish wine, to conquer such testing overseas markets as those of The United Kingdom, Germany, The United States, Japan, Switzerland, Venezuela,... in each of which the company has established a significant presence.

These are the markets where, thanks to the quality of the products, they can be found in the top stores of the major capitals of the world. This recognition is reflected also in the Wine Lists of the very best restaurants both in Spain and throughout the world. This is the reward for the on-going work of six generations, whose goal has always been to remain faithful to the spirit of the founders: to produce only top quality “Cavas” and still wines.



Viticulture Information: 

From its very beginnings, the house of Juvé & Camps, has produced wines only from grapes grown in its own vineyards and has never bought in a single liter of wine. This philosophy, passed down from generation to generation since the building of the first “bodega” in the early years of the century, has been the drive to purchase more vineyards. The expansion, improvement and care of the vineyards has first call on the companies resources.

They are all located in prime sites where each vine variety can give of its best. The family has always insisted on top quality fruit with low yields per vine to achieve the very best. Some 400 hectares of magnificent vineyards is the true patrimony of Juvé & Camps. In the mid 1950’s the family bought the Espiells vineyards, the name comes from a small chapel, a true jewel of the Romanesque dating from the IX century.

The vineyards of Casa Vella, Can Torres and Can Rius were subsequently added to form a total parcel of nearly 200 hectares of superb grape growing land. All these sites lie between 180 and 245 metres above sea level and are sheltered from the prevailing cold winds by the holy mountain of Montserrat which forms a striking back drop to a landscape of extraordinary beauty.

Here is where we grow the traditional varieties Macabeo and Xarel·lo as well as the prestigious Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. A few years later La Cuscona, to the south of San Sadurní, was purchased. This is a small but excellent vineyard on deep, flat and fertile land with a distinct microclimate. Finally, the lands of Can Massana, Alzinetes, El Prat and Mas Pagès were added to the family holdings.

These are situated in the Mediona highlands and are where the indigenous “Parellada” vines are grown alongside the classic, international varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. This impressive collection of vineyards allows the company to follow an ambitious agricultural policy of growing each vine variety in the most suitable areas. The methods of cultivation are environmentally friendly and complement the natural advantages of the soil, the climate and the fine, Mediterranean sunlight.
