Tempranillo

Tempranillo/ Tinto Fino/ Tinta del Pais/ Tinta de Toro/ Cencibel/ Ull de Llebre

Tempranillo is Spain’s best known quality red grape and it thrives in many regions but notably Rioja and Ribera del Duero where it known as Tinto Fino.

An early-ripening variety, Tempranillo is versatile: the range of wines produced from the grape extends from young, juicy, vibrant reds with little or no oak to more structured Crianzas and Reservas and, in Rioja, Gran Reservas capable of long ageing and development.

Tempranillo’s flavour spectrum varies according to its ageing credentials. Young reds typically show summer fruit characters – raspberries, strawberries and redcurrants - while their more grown-up siblings develop concentrated slightly spicy red fruit flavours with a harmonious backdrop of oak.

Based on the terroir and growing conditions, Tempranillo from Rioja is typically higher in acidity with floral and red fruit notes. Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero is typically higher in alcohol content with black fruit notes.
