Direct from the Winemaker: In this video Raül Bobet talks about the philosophy and history of the winery and walks us through each wine.

Location and climate

Castell d’Encus is located in Lleida in the Catalan Pyrenees in the Costers del Segre D.O. Thevineyards are set in a high altitude (800-1,000 metres above sea level) with good sun orientation andsurrounded by a forest of trees. The calcareous and clay-loam soils allow for good drainage and low yields. The continental weather, with a big difference of temperatures between the days and nights, offers the ideal conditions to obtain outstanding wines.

History

The origin of Castell d'Encus stems from the impact the location had on Raül Bobet in 2001 when he was looking for land that could reduce the effects of climate change on vineyards around the Catalan Pyrenees.

The site was traditionally a Romanic hermitage. The chapel is still standing on the property, however it wasn’t until Raul and his team started excavating the area for the planting of vines that they discoveredfermenting vats carved in the stone of the mountain in the 12th century.

This medieval process has been resurrected in the 21st century. The vats have been cleaned up and restored and many of them are used for the fermentation of Castell d’Encus wines, giving a unique story and characteristic to the wines. In the case of their “Quest” wine, the whole fermentation process takes places in these stone vats.

Winery

The winery was the first to use cold/heat transfer processes of geothermal energy in all its processes in an effort to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. The winery was designed tofunction by gravity in all its processes and has the most advanced winemaking technology.

The wine is fermented in different materials such as stone fermenting vats, wood tanks and stainlesssteel tanks. Thanks to these three materials they obtain wines with different tones and great aromatic complexity.

Viticulture Information
